Biography
Prof Simangele Shakwane is a Full Professor in the Department of Health Studies at the University of South Africa (UNISA) and an NRF C2rated scholar. She is a qualified nurse, midwifery practitioner, public health professional, and holder of a Bachelor of Laws (LLB). Her research focuses on bioethics and health law, quality nursing care, digital health, and humanised healthcare. Her interdisciplinary scholarship explores intimate care, the touched body, ritualisation, personhood, healing, and the transformation of bodies within healthcare and African cultural contexts, while advocating for the recognition and integration of African Indigenous Knowledge Systems in health sciences. Prof Shakwane supervises Master's and Doctoral students and serves as Chairperson of the Health Research Ethics Committee in the College of Human Sciences. She is the Project Lead for UNISA's ODeL Digital Healthcare and Touched Transformed Bodies initiative, which advances human-centred, digitally enabled healthcare and learning. An internationally recognised researcher, she is a recipient of the Falling Walls Women Breakthrough Award (Germany) and the African Women in Development (AWID) Award.
