Traditional Medicine and Ethnomedicine World Conference 2026

Abstract

The state of Tripura located in the northeastern part of India, bordered with Assam and partly Mizoram in the North, Bangladesh in the west, and Bay of Bengal in the east and South. The state has a rich ethnobotanical legacy and a wide variety of ethnomedicinal plants. The historic usage of plants by indigenous populations, including as the Tripuri, Reang, Jamatia, and Chakma, to treat a variety of illnesses is what defines the states ethnobotany. Potential medicinal plants found in Tripura, like Andrographis paniculata, Asparagus racemosus, Centella asiatica, Chromolaena odorata, Cissampelos pareira, Clerodendrum colebrookeanum, Curcuma aromatica, C. caesia, Gynocardia odorata, Mallotus philippensis, Mikania scandens, Oroxylum indicum, Rauvolfia serpentina, Smilax ovalifolia, S. perfoliata, Stephania japonica, and many others, have been used to treat conditions like diarrhea, hypertension, and malaria. Local communities may be able to make a living via the cultivation and commercialization of these therapeutic plants, but this will require systematic efforts to promote large scale production and standardization of agro techniques. Unfortunately, overexploitation, habitat loss, and deforestation have put many of these plants in danger, underscoring the need for medicinal plant conservation and sustainable development. The paper emphasizes the status and conservation of these traditional practices.
