Ethnopharmacology

Ethnopharmacology is a cross-disciplinary field of study that examines traditional medicines derived from natural products, particularly plants, which are indigenous to and used by local cultures for the treatment of various diseases. This field investigates the bioactive ingredients in these drugs and scientifically corroborates their potential for therapy, pharmacological aspects, and the contribution from the culture. At the Traditional Medicine and Ethnomedicine World Conference TMEWC 2026, the session on Ethnopharmacology will focus on groundbreaking research, case studies, and partnership models that not only ensure the Traditional formulations but also continue to probe their activity and facilitate the sustainable use of medicinal biodiversity. Herbalists and experts in the pharmaceutical field will be present, sharing their views on the topics of protection of biodiversity and intellectual property rights.

  • Phytochemistry
  • Pharmacognosy
  • Indigenous Knowledge
  • Natural Products
  • Herbal Remedies

Based on these facts, the presentation will proceed to a discussion of the role of advanced analysis and experimentation, including, among others, high-resolution mass spectrometry, bioassay-guided fraction isolation, and compound docking, in the identification of active ingredients. The relevance of areas such as phytochemistry and pharmacognosy in bridging the gap between traditional knowledge and pharmaceutical research will also be examined. Areas like Systems Biology, genomics, proteomics, and metabolomics will be used to shed light on the mysteries of herbal medicine.

Other aspects of translation that will be touched upon in the presentation include standardizing and ensuring the quality of herbal medicines in clinical settings. Ethical issues to be discussed in relation to translation include indigenous knowledge protection and benefit-sharing, as well as biopiracy. Methods of developing regulatory policies concerning herbal medicines will also be reviewed.

Significant Points:
  • Scientific proof of the efficacy of traditional medicine via ethnopharmacology methods
  • Contribution of Phytochemistry and Pharmacognosy in Pharmaceuticals
  • Identification and analysis of pharmacologically active components utilizing state-of-the-art technology
  • Application of omics and systems biology concepts for the investigation of herbal medicines
  • Standardization and quality control difficulties
  • Respectful utilization of Indigenous Knowledge
  • Intellectual property issues in natural products research
  • Preservation and sustainable exploitation of medicinal plant diversity

Ultimately, this workshop seeks to fortify the scientific and ethical underpinnings of ethnopharmacology in order to bring traditional medicine treatments to scientifically validated therapeutic levels.
